Elevators

Things which make people lazy are often called as technological advancements. This blog is about one such advancement - Elevators. Y suddenly about elevators?? I was asked to go for an audit of an elevator manufacturing unit which made me to browse about elevators and found some interesting facts which i wanted to share. What is the difference between an elevator and an escalator? Former is a vertical transportation, latter is a diagonal one. But both serve the same purpose - making people lazy!!!

Just for a minute think of a world without elevators… There cant be any high storeyed buildings. No big construction companies. No demand for cement, steel etc. No Infrastructure development leading to lesser industrial growth leading to unemployment.. so on and so forth.

Every one of us uses elevators in our daily life but we are not aware of some latest developments. Firstly, Destination Despatch system : This system automatically assigns the elevator that will take us to our floor. No more waiting for the elevators or being trapped in an elevator which stops at almost every level before we reach our destined floor. How does it function?? Here is the answer - as we enter a building, we have to register our destination floor or else we have to swipe our access control card through which the system assigns us to a particular elevator in which we have to climb based on the optimum waiting time!!!

Secondly, Double deck elevators : Elevators with two cars one on top of the other on the same hoistway are called Double deck elevators. Those headed for even numbered floors take the top deck while those destined for the odd numbered floors take the lower deck. I found out one good thing in this – if a person from an odd numbered floor wants to go to zero level, he cant go without walking from first floor to ground floor!!!

Some more interesting facts about elevators which u may not know (‘m sure about that) :

  • Speed and capacity of the lift are directly pr0portional to each other. More the capacity, greater the speed and vice versa.
  • Elevators can climb at a speed of 25 to 35 kmph. Coming down at the same speed can blow out your ear drums.
  • Elevators in high rise building generate power when they move up and down and flow it back into the building’s electrical system.
On an ending note(something useful), the only physical exercise which we can do at our workplace is climbing up the stairs which if we use to our advantage can save our life from a heart attack (as per a recent research conducted by an US medical association). Using the stairs as an alternative to the elevator or escalator can burn about 500 calories per hour, depending on your weight. Nothing more to add.
